One year ago this week we were on our way to North Dakota with a 7 week old son and a 4 1/2 year old black pug...
We stopped in Monterey overnight to visit some old friends who used to be stationed with us in Dayton. We toured the Monterey Bay Aquarium thanks to some free tickets they had. They also kept Bailey overnight so we could stay in the Naval School hotel.
touring San Francisco by car...
We drove over the Golden Gate Bridge since Matt had never been. We wish we'd had more time in California so we could have seen so much more of this beautiful state...
By the third day of the trip, while driving through Nevada, Bailey started his silent rebellion by sitting with his back to us in his seat. He had heroically endured the five day journey to Cali from Ohio only six months earlier. Needless to say, he was all too familiar with the unfolding scene and was none too pleased...
On the other side of the van, Henry was just hanging out and taking naps. I t was the best age for him to travel. He wasn't mobile yet, he could look at toys, and he still slept often. We only drove 6 hours every day, so our daily routine was to drive 3 hours, stop and get lunch, walk Bailey around, nurse Henry, get back in the car and drive 3 more to the hotel.

On Henry's 2 month birthday we drove through the west side of Yellowstone (from Wyoming to Montana). It was a crisp and cool fall day with a beautifully clear blue sky.
After an overnight stay in Billings, Montana, we made a brief stop the next morning at Pompey's Pillar - where William Clark (of Lewis & Clark fame) signed his name. You can see the pillar to the left in the background of the one picture. It was blazing hot that day.

On September 11, 2007, we arrived in the great state of North Dakota. Here was our view the whole day...
This is a little hillier than the area around Minot, although everything else looks the same on our drive between the base and the actual town. For the next three or so weeks we lived in the Sleep Inn since our household goods were prematurely put in storage and the 2 local moving companies were booked solid through the end of the month.

Once we knew for sure that we'd be staying in the hotel for awhile, we coughed up the extra fee to get a bigger room with a couch, table and chairs, and a fridge/microwave. Here is Henry enjoying some couch time...

And finally we moved into our base house...
